An Introduction to CIL

with ALEXIS JOHNSON, Ph.D.
and
JUDITH SARAH SCHMIDT, Ph.D.

10:00 AM to 5:30 PM Saturday, April 26, 2003

This event is intended to help potential Midwestern CIL students to familiarize themselves with the people and ideas that make up the Center for Intentional Living. Co-founders Alexis Johnson, PhD., and Judith Sarah Schmidt, PhD., will be on hand to outline the history and philosophy of CIL and to answer questions.

Among the subjects dealt with will be:

The Mother's Face; Roots of Faith

Judith Schmidt, PhD

The first mirror a child knows is the face of its mother. This mirror - through its smiles and frowns, its eyes and its sounds - informs the infant what the world is like. The infant's cellular being grows in this co-created matrix. In ways that the child's needs were met with approval and appreciation, the child will find safety and self-esteem. In ways this unfolding was not met, not mirrored, the child will find anxiety and doubt.

In this introductory workshop, we will explore your inner rhythms of security and doubt. We will also explore the journey needed to heal personal anxieties and strengthen self-esteem and faith. We will use theory, group sharing and guided imagery to deepen our understanding of this formative period of life.

Compassionate Understanding of Family Loyalty

Alexis Johnson, PhD

Each of us is born into dependence and must be taken care of for a long time. During these early years, we co-create an attachment style - secure or insecure. Whatever it is, it forms the template for our relationship to our self, to our intimate others and to transpersonal realms. We grow up with an unspoken, unconscious set of rules of 'how to do it' - 'it' being how to do relationships in general, and in particular how love should look and feel.

Our time together will be both theoretical and experiential. Through family sculptures and guided imagery we will explore your personal attachment style. We will also come to understand the steps of transforming dysfunctional styles. The first steps of the journey are often in the realm of understanding, but understanding is never enough; deep compassion is also required!

This seminar is directly tied to the three-year CIL instruction beginning in October of 2003 in the Chicago area.

Belong and Longing

with ALEXIS JOHNSON, Ph.D.

Friday through Sunday, November 21, 22, and 23, 2003

As human beings we all need and long for meaningful relationships of all kinds from a soul mate to deep friendships to good neighbors. We also need a good relationship with our inner self. Each of us needs different amounts of time alone and time with others. The first templates for relationship are laid into the non-verbal part of the brain in the family or origin. This is how we know what love feels like. We spend the rest of our lives struggling for a balance of giving and receiving – getting our needs met and being empathic to the feelings and needs of our important others. This workshop will put you in touch with your own capacity to create the relationships you want.

Path of Rhythm: Path of Addiction

with JUDITH SARAH SCHMIDT, Ph.D.

Friday through Sunday, January 30, 31, and February 1, 2004

In this workshop, we will take an in-depth look at what causes us to turn toward food, work, exercise, drugs or sex in a driven attempt to create soothing and safety. Current developmental and neurobiological theories will be explored to help us understand what propels us or others into an addictive vortex. We will experience some of the psycho-spiritual approaches to healing to find those that best suit both your personal integration and as a health care professional.

Joyful Living

with ALEXIS JOHNSON, Ph.D.

Friday through Sunday, April 30, May 1 and 2, 2004

Stress is part of life – both stress that comes from the outside and stress that we each generate from our history and inner stories. There is also ‘normal’ stress and ‘traumatic’ stress. If these experiences are not met with consciousness they will be stored in the body. Many of us have created the habit of turning stress into physical symptoms that deplete the joy of living and of life. This workshop will help us each identify how we turn stress into physical strain and will help us find ways to undo that process and allow more flow, creativity and joy in daily living.
